Main Square of Ancient Buda

It was here, in Ancient Buda that the history of Budapest started 2000 years ago, with the foundation of the Roman city of Aquincum, which served as a base for the development of the capital just like in the case of other former Roman cities, London, Paris and Vienna. In 1873, the three independent cities of Buda, Ancient Buda and Pest were unified to form one city, the capital city. On the Buda side, the Main Square (Fő tér) at the head of the Árpád Bridge was the former centre of the town and today, it is still one of the most charming squares of Budapest. The square's uniqueness is defined by its one storey high buildings, pleasant restaurants and valuable museums. (Óbudai Múzeum, Vasarely Múzeum, Kiscelli Múzeum). Its adornment is the baroque styled Zichy-Residence, however the Town hall which was built at the turn of the century is just as unique. In its neighbourhood, on the Hajógyár Island (Hajógyári-sziget) stands the Palace of the Roman Governor, however the island today is more famous for the Sziget Festival organized there each year in August.
