The capital's largest indoor market can be found at the head of the Szabadság Bridge on the Pest side, on Fővám square (Fővám tér). After it was built in 1897, along with five others of its kind (at Rákóczi square, Klauzál square, Hunyadi square, Battyány square and Hold street) all built in similar style, were all opened on the same day to the public. The largest and most modern of them all however, is this one, the Grand Market Hall at Fővám square. Back in the days, the loaded barges (floats) were able to access the market place directly from beneath, through underground canals. If we feel like shopping in a real market or want some traditional Hungarian delicacies, we should definitely visit this market, which in structure resembles a railway station. Once there, do not forget to take home some real Kalocsai red-pepper and Hungarian szalami!
